Abstract/Summary

A geophysical survey by magnetometry was undertaken by Allen Archaeology for the National Trust on land at Canons Ashby House, Canons Ashby, Northamptonshire. The works were undertaken to help inform potential sewerage improvement works for the estate. The site is immediately adjacent to the Scheduled area of the medieval settlement of Canons Ashby Priory. The survey has identified a number of archaeological features within the site. Immediately noticeable were parallel linear positive anomalies that related to the ridge and furrow cultivation clearly visible within the field. The survey also identified linear anomalies that could represent cultivation trends on a different alignment, but this may relate to field drainage. A circular anomaly roughly 5 – 6 metres in diameter was clearly seen on the geophysical results, and this could potentially relate to an undated former structure. These results have added to the continually growing geophysical survey of the grounds of Canons Ashby House and our understanding of the land use through time.
