Abstract/Summary

In June 2022 an archaeological evaluation was undertaken on the remains of a Roman villa situated on land near Nobottle, Northamptonshire, centred on NGR SP 68197 63308. The evaluation confirmed the presence of a Roman villa, with a number of walls recorded across the trench. The construction style and orientation of the walls suggested that the villa had been expanded and remodelled on at least one occasion. The artefact data suggested occupation during the 2nd to 4th centuries. Overlying the villa deposits was the remains of a possible timber building, which had a mortar floor. The building appears to have been constructed across the demolished and levelled remains of the villa. At present it is thought this may be late 4th century or early 5th century. Further work is planned for the site in future in order to record more of the villa plan, refine the dates of occupation and determine how the villa evolved over time. Further work will also allow for more evidence of the post Roman occupation of the site to be recorded.
