Abstract/Summary

Northamptonshire County Council are disposing of land currently occupied by Oundle Church of England Primary School. The site of the school lies in a landscape rich in prehistoric and Roman archaeology, due to its location close to the River Nene. Iron Age and Roman artefacts are known from within the town, but the precise nature of the activity here is not known. The site is located on the northern egde of the medieval core of the settlement. The site of the school occupies the rear part of a tenement extending back from West Street north towards the Milton Road. It lies beyond the significant core of buildings close to the church, where the Saxon core of the settlement is thought to have developed, in an area of probable 11th century planned expansion. The school is set back from the street frontage and it is probable that there will be evidence of medieval 'backplot' activities. However, previous small-scale evaluation to the south of the site did not find any evidence of medieval activity and the construction of the school and related structures is likely to have truncated earlier remains.
