Abstract/Summary

Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Camps Environmental Services Ltd, acting on behalf of Kier and for Highways England, to undertake an archaeological watching brief during a linear scheme of drainage and highway improvement works to the A5 carriageway running from NGR 459553, 267892 to 461329, 264461. The site lay adjacent to and within the boundary of the Roman Town of Bannaventa, a Scheduled Monument (SM) protected under national legislation (Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979). The watching brief was part of the planning permission and Scheduled Monument Consent (SMC) conditions. No archaeological remains were observed during excavation. Previous pipeline and ditching works had disturbed the ground adjacent to either side of the A5 to a depth of at least 1 m below ground level.
