Abstract/Summary

Phoenix Consulting Archaeology Limited commissioned Allen Archaeology Limited to undertake a geophysical survey using magnetometry on land at Area C, Bozeat Quarry, Strixton, Northamptonshire, prior to the submission of a planning application for a quarry extension. The site lies in an area of archaeological potential, with extensive archaeological activity dating to the Romano-British period located immediately to the west of the survey area, and uncovered in advance of sand extraction on land at Bozeat Quarry. Traces of early to middle Saxon occupation were also present in the area. The survey has revealed little of archaeological interest, with the only archaeological features identified being potential ridge and furrow cultivation and possible areas of former quarrying of an unknown date. The survey has also revealed modern land drains and areas of magnetic noise likely caused by buried modern material. The set-aside along the western part of the site was too overgrown to allow surveying, and it is possible that there are archaeological features within that area.
