Abstract/Summary

A programme of archaeological monitoring of temporary works needed to enable the replacement of the two footbridges over the River Nene and the Chester River was undertaken within the Scheduled Ancient Monument of Irchester Roman Town (NHLE 1003892). The archaeological monitoring and recording was carried to fulfil one of the conditions of Scheduled Monument Consent (S00242615) under which the work was carried out. Following a toolbox talk intermittent monitoring of the works was carried out of the construction of a route from the A45 down to the river crossing, from the Claudius Way car park and of the compound directly south of the Claudius Way carpark and the crane platform on the river floodplain. The works entailed the construction of each element in such a way that there was no ground penetration or damage and that construction materials did not spread beyond the protective matting. Once the old bridges had been removed and the new bridges installed the temporary surfaces were removed to expose the original ground surface which rapidly started to regrow. The work has been allocated the event number ENN110367 in the Historic Environment record.
