Abstract/Summary

The combined techniques of magnetic and resistance survey painted a comprehensive picture of the archaeological remains in the Orchard Field, Sibbertoft. The footprint of the former "Mansion House" was identified as well as what appeared to be the remains of ancillary buildings to the north, all apparently constructed, at least partially, of brick. Associated garden features including a lake and waterways were recorded along with more ephemeral responses perhaps indicating walled or formal gardens. The line of the original medieval road was confirmed and, adjacent to it, relatively undisturbed medieval tenement plots were apparent. Within these plots there was evidence of possible dwellings and other potentially archaeological anomalies. The project produced an interesting dataset which spanned features from the medieval [tenement plots and road], through to the modern day [ferrous responses from recently planted, fenced-off trees] and corroborated the 1782 drawing by Joseph Sturgis, until now, the only available evidence for the location of the "Mansion House".
