Abstract/Summary
A programme of Historic Building Recording was undertaken at 26-27 Main Street, Fotheringhay, Northamptonshire on the 10th of May 2023. The buildings comprise a pair of Grade II Listed semi- detached estate cottages thought to date to the first quarter of the nineteenth century. The work was undertaken in response to a condition for Historic Building Recording imposed on planning permission granted by North Northamptonshire Council. The work was undertaken by Dale Trimble of Trimble Archaeological Services. The buildings are well preserved with their internal layout largely intact, apart from a twentieth century extension to the rear. There are surviving original doors and cupboards, some with likely original latches and fittings. The proposal is to convert the pair of cottages to a single dwelling. Proposed alterations to the fabric are limited, the most significant comprising the removal of short sections of wall upstairs and downstairs to create access between the cottages. Sections of wall beneath two former windows in the rear walls of both cottages will be removed to create to new access into the rear of the property. Early 18th and nineteenth century maps consulted for the study indicate that the extant cottages replaced an earlier structure which stood on the site. This earlier building was probably demolished during renovation of estate infrastructure by Thomas Belsey following his purchase of the manorial estate in 1806. None of the research undertaken for this study challenges the currently held view that the cottages date to the early part of the nineteenth.
