Abstract/Summary

Mr Derek Roberts, on behalf of the Rockingham Forest Trust, commissioned Allen Archaeology Limited to undertake a geophysical survey using magnetometry on Irthlingborough Bronze Age round barrow at Stanwick Lakes, Stanwick, Northamptonshire. The barrow is located within a landscape of significant archaeological activity, with evidence for prehistoric and Roman settlement revealed close by during previous archaeological investigations. Prior to gravel extraction there were three other known barrows located within 400m of this barrow. The geophysical survey clearly revealed features within the barrow mound and potentially in the area within close proximity. Surveying at a higher resolution than standard allowed finer details of the mound to be revealed and compared well with the previous resistivity survey in 1995. Differences between the results can be attributed to both the different survey methodologies and potentially more damage to the barrow by rabbit burrows since that survey
