Abstract/Summary
Astrum Hones commissioned Allen Archaeology Ltd (AAL) to carry out a programme of archaeological strip, map and record on land off Station Road, Long Buckby, Northamptonshire, as a condition of planning consent for a residential development. The site lies in an area of archaeological interest, with prehistoric and Roman activity observed to the immediate north of the development area during previous archaeological trial trenching. A north-northeast to south-southwest orientated ditch, exposed by trial trenching and geophysical survey, was recorded during the 2012 (Albion Archaeology) and 2021 (AAL) evaluations and contained pottery sherds dating to between the late 1st and 3rd century AD, suggesting that it is Roman in date, which corresponds to previous interpretations of this feature. An area measuring approximately 70 metres by 40 metres was stripped and investigated as part of a final mitigation for the site. Two Romano-British ditches were recorded, both corresponding with the features identified by the previous trial trenching. One ran north-northeast to sout-southwest across the full length of the site, with the second ditch running parallel to this and turning eastwards. This second ditch corresponds with a geophysical anomaly and recorded to the south which appears to form part of an enclosure extending beyond the site to the east. A small group of pits and postholes were recorded on the site within this enclosure. These features contained fragments of Roman tile associated with a hypocaust system, as well as an assemblage of pottery which included imported Samian ware, which could be indicative of a high-status dwelling in the vicinity of the site.
