SNN115454 - Archaeological desk-based assessment of alnd at Kiln Farm, Sulgrave Manor, Sulgrave, Northamptonshire, May 2021

MOLA (Museum of London Archaeology) conducted an archaeological desk-based heritage assessment of land at Kiln Farm, Sulgrave, Northamptonshire. The proposed development sites lie at the north-eastern end of Sulgrave on the north side of Manor Road and on the eastern side of Little Street. Plot 1 comprises redundant farm buildings and two Listed Buildings off Manor Road and Plot 2 occupies an area within an open field to the east of Sulgrave Manor. There is one Scheduled Monument, one Registered Garden, one conservation area and 36 Listed Buildings within 700m of the site. There is no evidence for prehistoric activity within Sulgrave and evidence of Roman occupation is limited. A late Saxon and early medieval high status defended settlement lies to the southwest of the sites, comprising a castle ringwork and is a Scheduled Monument. It is likely that earlier Saxon remains survive within Sulgrave, although their location is unknown. The medieval settlement extended further to the north-east, east and south-east than the current village and may survive within Plot 2. Plot 1 lay within the open fields and may contain ridge and furrow cultivation. Cartographic evidence suggests that the remains of former agricultural buildings and domestic outbuildings lie within Plot 1 although Plot 2 remained within open fields throughout the post-medieval period. A setting assessment was also undertaken to examine the effects of the proposed developments upon Sulgrave Manor and Sulgrave Conservation Area.
