Abstract/Summary

On 23 May and 15-18 August 2022, Cotswold Archaeology carried out a programme of metal detector survey followed by archaeological observation, investigation, recording, analysis and publication, during groundworks associated with the installation of a water pipe within the boundaries of the Registered Battlefield: Battle of Edgcote (NHLE 1413782). A late medieval horseshoe was recovered during preliminary metal detector survey, along with miscellaneous post-medieval and modern metalwork. Monitored groundworks comprised the excavation of a 140m long trench and two launch/receiving pits for directional drilling. A stone alignment, putatively an undated wall foundation, was recorded at the northern end of the water pipe trench. Alluvial deposits were identified in the north-westernportion of the pipeline trench and in Pit 1, 30m south of the River Cherwell. A single Roman potsherd was recovered from the alluvial deposits. Apart from the late medieval horseshoe, no other artefacts or features were identified that could be associated with the Battle of Edgcote.
