Abstract/Summary
This collection comprises images from an Archaeological Watching Brief at Hogg Lane, Charlton, OX17 3DJ, undertaken by drp archaeology, in order to fulfill the requirements of a Planning condition set by the Local Planning Authority at Northamptonshire Council. This report sets out the results of that monitoring work. The site is located 42km to the southwest of Northampton, in the village of Charlton. The site is situated on the western side of Hogg Lane, forming a roughly square plot within the rear garden of Chatterwell. The development consisted of the erection of two large, detached dwellings. The development consisted of the erection of two large, detached dwellings. The development groundworks took place in March 2021 and January 2022 and consisted of two areas surrounding the footprint of the dwellings. Area 1 involved 7 small penalty trenches, representing footing trenches that had been undertaken without archaeological monitoring. Area 2 consisted of a single trench which was to contain all services extending between the two houses to the existing road. This represented an investigation area of approximately 23.25m2. The results of the monitoring identified a solid, undisturbed geological sequence below the topsoil, which in some cases included building rubble laid down as part of this development after topsoil stripping. No archaeological features, deposits or finds were revealed Whilst the site is located in a landscape dominated by rural Medieval and Post-medieval settlement, and held the possibility of encountering Anglo-Saxon archaeology, groundworks revealed no evidence for this. Instead, it appears that outside of the direct building footprint there has been little disturbance, indicating that where heritage assets exist, these should be well preserved.
