Abstract/Summary
In August 2023, Cotswold Archaeology carried out an archaeological evaluation of Land southeast of Field View, Brackley, Northamptonshire. A total of 14 trenches were excavated across the 2.5ha site to investigate anomalies identified by a preceding geophysical survey and to determine whether remains of prehistoric and medieval date recorded in the wider area extend into the development area. Two possible phases of medieval agricultural activity, followed by a subsequent phase of medieval/post-medieval ridge and furrow were identified during the fieldwork. The evaluation also identified a post-medieval/modern field boundary depicted on the 1888-1913 six inch Ordnance Survey map, and evidence of recent modern activity at the northern end of the Site. The results of the evaluation did not correlate well with the geophysical survey, with most of the medieval ditches undetected, possibly due to the presence of pronounced ridge and furrow across the Site.
