Title | Archaeological Test Pit Evaluation at Doddridge Car Park, Northampton |
Author/Originator | Robert Simister Falvey |
Date/Year | 2023 |
Abstract/Summary
MOLA (Museum of London Archaeology) excavated a total of three test pits (TP1 – TP3), each measuring 3m by 3m to quantify the burials within the disused burial ground at the north of the site and to assess the nature and extent of surviving archaeological remains to the south. The burial ground examined in TP1, were it to be fully excavated, has the potential to yield results of regional significance. Six of the seven burials encountered in TP1 were preserved in situ, however information has been gathered on site to estimate the spread, depth and the density of the burials. It is likely that the burial ground has around 1,500 burials within it. In TP 1 and 2 an archaeological horizon dated to the 12th -14th century was identified below modern truncation of 0.96m below ground level TP2 and 1.75m in TP3.
