Abstract/Summary

AB Heritage was commissioned by Elgin Energy to undertake a magnetic geophysical survey (gradiometer) at land north of Grafton Underwood, Northamptonshire. The site was approximately 60ha in area and moslty occupied the former RAF aifield of Grafton Underwood, which was utilised in the early 1940s by Bomber Command and then by the US Airforce later in WWII. Due to weather restrictions and the condition of some of the available fields, the survey was restricted to a surveyed area of 21ha across five separate areas. The results have revealed features of probable archaeological interest, including an enclosure and associated ditches. A number of uncertain responses have also been detected, along with ridge and furrow ploughing. Land drains and the location of a service pipe have been marked. Zones of magnetic disturbance and ferrous responses detected throughout the dataset correspond with the locations of features associated with the former WWII airbase.
