Abstract/Summary

Pre-Develop Archaeology Limited commissioned Allen Archaeology Limited to undertake a geophysical survey using magnetometry on land at Hollywell Farm, Chelveston Road, Stanwick, North Northamptonshire prior to determination of a planning application for the installation of 75KW ground mounted Solar Panels. The site has significant archaeological potential, as cropmarks indicating the presence of a prehistoric pit alignment running through the site are visible on aerial photography. In the surrounding area prehistoric activity is relatively widespread; cropmarks and previous archaeological work have indicated the presence of possible settlements, enclosures and burials of potential prehistoric origin nearby, with flint scatters recorded by fieldwalking in several areas. This survey revealed the presence of the suspected prehistoric pit alignment extending beyond the survey area to the north and south, and medieval ridge and furrow cultivation trends running on a north – south alignment. There are high levels of magnetic noise across the central part of the survey area, which has potentially masked any ephemeral archaeological remains in this area.
