Abstract/Summary

Archaeological open-area excavation was undertaken between 9th January and 9th February 2023, in advance of residential development of Site E – Land at Northdale End, Raunds, Northamptonshire. The work was commissioned, by Snowdon Homes Ltd, in compliance with planning consent (NE/21/00379/FUL) which required the mplementation of an archaeological mitigation strategy. This report presents the results of the open-area excavation. The most significant evidence on the site consisted of settlement-related remains dating to the late Anglo-Saxon period, including the remnants of a timber post-built structure, clusters of pits and possible fence lines within two large rectangular enclosures with evidence of potential subdivision. Earlier remains comprised a single pit dated to the Roman period. Also identified across the site, preserved within the overburden, were medieval topost-medieval ridge and furrow sealing the features from earlier periods.A summary of the work will be submitted to CBA South Midlands, and this report will be uploaded onto the OASIS website (ref. no.: albionar1-517688). With the landowner’s permission the archive will be deposited with the Northamptonshire Archaeological Resource Centre (NARC), under HER event code: ENN110841
