Full Description
{1} Magnetic anomalies may represent medieval enclosures and settlement features. Linear markings appear to define enclosures and would be consistent with medieval closes.
{2} Archaeological evaluation identified a number of ditches and pits which were dated to the late Saxon and medieval periods.
{4} Archaeological excavation identified an area of late Saxon and medieval occupation. The settlement originated in the late Saxon period comprising a trackway, a post-built structure, pit cluster and ditched boundaries and a further trackway to the north. Subsequently, a series of enclosures was established, which were further extended and reworked during the earlier medieval period, along with a trackway and two drying ovens. Evidence of open fields was identified in the northern part of the excavation area. Settlement activity had ceased by the late medieval period. An isolated cremation burial is presumed to be Iron Age in date. Partial ditched enclosures also dated to the Iron Age.
{6} Further excavation to the west of the 2021 excavation identified a continuation of the late Saxon settlement remains, including the remains of a timber post-built structure, clusters pits and possible fence lines within two large rectangular enclosures [parts of which had been exposed in the earlier excavation]. Earlier remains comprised a single pit dating to the Roman period.
