Abstract/Summary
Park View Stables comprises one of the remaining elements of the former Park View House complex of buildings, south of Towcester. Park View House was constructed in the 1830s and the stables were constructed between 1855 and 1867, replacing a previous stable block on the same site. The stables were formerly attached to Park View House prior to the demolition of the latter in the mid-20th century. Whilst one portion of the former house was left standing, attached to the stables, this has now also been demolished along with a further stable block to the north and other outbuildings within the vicinity of the stables due to their unstable condition. There is no longer any visible evidence of the former house apart from fragmentary remains at the eastern extent of the stables. The surviving stable building comprises a single rectangular range that incorporates a projecting gable bay with decorative features such as stone quoins, stone aperture dressings, an oculus aperture and a timber bell-cote. Otherwise the building is relatively unadorned and probably intended to be subservient to the elaborately styled gothic Park View House. The stables retain very few internal historical fixtures and fittings, and vidences considerable alteration to window and door openings throughout. However, the overall composition and principal decorative elements survive and the original design intention for the building can be readily interpreted. This Historic Building Record has documented the present appearance, context and surviving features of the building through updated photographs and narration. The building is in a very poor condition as evidenced by multiple areas of ongoing deterioration. This survey has provided a Level 3 record of the building prior to its approved demolition. All parts of the building of any historical significance have been recorded and photographed
