Abstract/Summary

A programme of historic building recording was undertaken ahead of alteration and conversion works being carried out at The Manor House, Nortoft, Guilsborough, Northamptonshire, on behalf of Robert Steele. The buildings recorded include the ironstone 17th century Grade II Listed farmhouse, and adjacent ironstone bakehouse and brick shelter shed. The earliest part of the farmhouse, now in use as a house, dates to the late 17th century. It is formed of regular coursed ironstone to four storeys (including cellar and attic) in a three-unit plan with a cross-wing. Brick extensions were added to the north-east and south-west gables in the midto late 20th century. The one-storey shelter shed, open-fronted on its south-west side and of probable early to mid-19th century date, stands to the east of The Manor House. It is constructed from red brick, in English bond. Conversion work had begun on the shelter shed but photos of the building prior to the work revealed it was used for storage. A 17th/18th century bakehouse building, composed of faced blocks of ironstone, with some larger quoin-type blocks at the corners of the southwest gable end, also stands to the east of The Manor House. The position of the former bakehouse oven was marked by an extensive wall scar andsooting of internal surfaces. It likely had a two-flue chimney, which had been removed by the date of the recording.
