Abstract/Summary

During construction works for Phase 2 of the Buckton Fields development, human bones were identified by contractors. The police were initially contacted though after discussion with the Lead Planning Archaeologist, and MOLA project management, it was determined that the remains were related to nearby archaeological activity. As MOLA were at the time excavating Phase 3 of the Buckton Fields development, they were asked to excavate a small area around the location where the bones were discovered. Excavation identified an undisturbed portion of a burial pit with some n-situ skeletal remains. The disturbed bones recovered by contractors have been shown to have come from this same burial. Pottery associated with the burial has been dated to the Early Bronze Age, and a radiocarbon sample has confirmed a date in the late 3rd millennium BC.
