Abstract/Summary

This Heritage Statement should be read in conjunction with the planning application. The land surrounding the garden of Sulby Abbey Farm to the east, south and west is part of the scheduled monument of Sulby Abbey. The eastern boundary of the development area is formed by the entrance to the abbey and the track leading from the road to the abbey complex. The area of the proposed development is some distance away from the main complex of earthworks at the centre of the abbey site and is located on an area of ridge and furrow. It is proposed to erect ancilliary buildings to the existing house at Sulby Abbey Farm and to construct new vehicular access. The ridge and furrow is incidental to the remains of Sulby Abbey and is considered to be a later addition to the landscape. The impact on the ridge and furrow caused by the proposed development will be negligible and the proposals will not affect the remains of the abbey in any way. Likewise, there will be no impact on the Grade II Listed Sulby Abbey Farmhouse and Attached Barns located nearby. The proposal will have no negative impact on the Grade II Listed Sulby Abbey Farmhouse and a negligible effect on the Scheduled Monument, Sulby Abbey. The impact on the setting of the heritage assets will also be negligible.
