Abstract/Summary

This report describes the results of an archaeological trial trench evaluation undertaken by Witham Archaeology at land off Cotterstock Road, Glapthorn, Northamptonshire. The project was commissioned by Francis Jackson Homes to comply with a condition of planning permission relating to the proposed construction of 5 dwellings. No previous archaeological work has been recorded within the area of the proposed development. Work in the surrounding area has revealed Roman and medieval finds and features. A late 15th century pottery and tile kiln and associated workshop has been recorded to the north of the site. Manor Farm to the east of the site includes 15th century elements. Results of this investigation indicate two phases of activity on the site, of which the earliest phase is dated by an assemblage of Medieval pottery. Four features of 12th to 13th century date comprise 2 gullies, one pit and a possible buried soil horizon. An episode of Medieval quarrying appears to have occurred towards the northeast end of the site. The size of the pottery assemblage alone suggests an intensity of occupation at the site beyond that indicated by the features revealed within the trenches. The second phase concerns Late Medieval to Post-Medieval period (probably mid-15th to mid-16th century) abandonment and demolition of the Medieval structures at the site. Results of the trial trenching described here prompted an additional stage of archaeological ‘Strip, Map and Record’ investigation (site code ENN110826– report forthcoming). The subsequent work significantly clarified the pattern of former occupation at the site, particularly in revealing the stone foundations of buildings arranged along the southern side of Cotterstock Road, beyond the scope of the trial trenching exercise.
