Abstract/Summary

In March 2022, Cotswold Archaeology was commissioned by Adam Architecture to undertake a Level 2 Historic Building Recording of Boughton Wood Lodge, Boughton Wood Lodge Road, Geddington, Northamptonshire. The work was required to record the building prior to its demolition under planning permission NK/2021/0458. Condition 2 of this permission required the building to be recorded to Historic England Level 2 standard (a ‘descriptive’ recording) prior to demolition. The Building comprises an early 18th century gamekeeper’s lodge surrounded by several ancillary buildings associated with its 19th and 20th century use. The Lodge is a NonDesignated Heritage Asset, historically associated with Grade I Listed Boughton House located c.1.6km to the south-west, and is located within Grade I Listed Boughton House Registered Park and Garden, at the edge of a large wooded area. The Site is to be redeveloped with a new two storey dwelling, garage, and gardens. The Building has undergone some alteration since its construction in the first half of the 18th century, particularly with the demolition of small extensions and the addition of brick lean-tos to its external elevations. There have also been changes to the surrounding site with the demolition/addition of several ancillary buildings. This assessment presents the results of the Level 2 building survey and the associated photographic, written and drawn record, which was defined in the preceding, approved Written Scheme of Investigation (Cotswold Archaeology April 2022; Appendix 1).
