Abstract/Summary
The Methodist Church at Towcester, Northamptonshire, straddles the projected line of the defences of the Roman town of Lactodurum. Previous research has shown that the defences of Roman, late Saxon and seventeenth-century date survive in the general area, together with the remains of domestic occupation throughout the Roman period. The extension to the church provided a limited opportunity to investigate the former wall and rampart. Archaeological watching brief during the excavation of foundation trenches for the extension identified a bank possibly related to the rampart together with an area of limestone and cobblestone metalling set within clay at the rear. Small amounts of mostly second century AD pottery were associated with the feature.
