Title Archaeological excavation of land adjacent to Campbell Square, Northampton, 1995-6
Author/Originator
Date/Year 1996

Abstract/Summary

Excavations to the north of Campbell Square revealed three phases of occupation, spanning the period from as early as the 12th century to the 19th century. A deep, wide ditch may relate to the medieval or Civil War defences of Northampton, it may have been short-lived and ironstone structures were built over it in the late 16th-17th centuries. These were subsequently reduced to foundations and the site extensively quarried before being redeveloped in 1845.
