Summary

Archaeological evaluation on land adjacent to Campbell Square identified extensive 17th-19th century quarrying that had destroyed earlier archaeological remains.

Full Description

{1} Evidence of extensive quarrying of south-west part of site from C17th to 1845; large pit in Trench 1 possibly for clay extraction; second smaller pit cut backfill of first; both of C17th date; further large pit in Trench 2 filled with C17th material including fragment of rare C16-17th unglazed stove tile bearing lion-passant; second smaller but deeply cut C17th pit also in Trench 2;

{2} Immediately north of town wall is area presumed to indicate quarrying; area covering Bailiff Street indicates quarrying & shown as "stone pittes";

{3} Possible quarries identified throughout site; some may be confused with C19th school cellars;

{4} Beeby Thompson identified old quarry beyond town walls which had become a 'muckhill' by 1686; carried out investigative section to verify this;

{5} Large number of quarry pits dated to late C17th to early C19th; 8 fragments of bottle glass from 2 shaft & globe bottles; 1 with part of prunt; residual fragments of medieval window glass including some with traces of red-ochre paint; also fragments of clay tobacco pipe were recovered;
