Abstract/Summary

Scanning suggested a generally quiet level of background response, although in some fields remnant ridge and furrow has increased the background noise. Several anomalies were noted during scanning for subsequent investigation by detailed gradiometry. Concentrations of archaeological anomalies were detected in the north of Field 1 and the south of Fields 1 and 2. These include several ring ditches and a series of enclosures and ditches; the latter coincide with the known Iron Age/ Romano-British site. Several strong enclosure type anomalies were also located in field 13. They represent the remaining parts of a cropmark complex excavated before the construction of the A509 road. Several linear anomalies of possible interest have been located in fields 4, 5, 10 and 11. Within field 4 a circular anomaly has been noted and, while an archaeological origin cannot be ruled out, the associated responses suggest a more recent origin. Broad areas of increased noise were detected in field 14. While these may be natural or modern in origin, an archaeological interpetation such as building remains cannot be ruled out. Elsewhere, the detailed survey has primarily detected ridge and furrow, disturbed ground and isolated pit like responses. It is possible that the latter are due to localised pedological variations.
