Monument record 8332/0/1 - Post-Medieval/Modern Quarry Pits

A possible single, large or more likely two smaller post-medieval Ironstone quarry pits and a large modern pit were uncovered.

{1/2} Concentration of pits and short ditch type responses noted during geophysical survey.

{3} A 39 trench evaluation found a Post-Medieval/Modern Ironstone Quarry pits and a modern rubbish pit. It is likely that the quarry pits were used to extract the local deposits of Ironstone. The large modern pit contained large quantities of large, subangular worked stones and two likely modern nails. Investigation into the stones demonstated that they had been dumped rather than being in situ remains of structural foundations. A modern field boundary ditch was recorded and contained a modern shotgun cartridge (not retained).
