Abstract/Summary
Desk-based assessment of the archaeology and history of a plot of land west of High Street, Rothwell has indicated that the plot was formerly occupied by late medieval or early post-medieval buildings, perhaps belonging principally to farms. These may have swamped an earlier layout of land divisions lying at right-angles to the High Street. The minor thoroughfare of Wales Street, and other access roads which lie adjacent to the site, may have been laid out along the former land boundaries. It is possible that the line of the High Street has moved progressively eastward where it now presents a distinctive bulge from the natural, straighter course of the A6 road. Rothwell Nunnery does not stand on or adjacent to the site.
