Abstract/Summary

These maps (NRO FH 272/8+9), while showing the house partly in plan and partly as an elevation, may be a fairly accurate depiction of Kirby and its surroundings. Both maps are dated 1586, but whilst most of the detail is very similar there are variations in some parts as well as the way in which the fields or plots are labelled, most significantly perhaps that of the area to the immediate west of the house as ‘ye garden’ and ‘the garden and orchard’. The maps show a landscape in transition with elements of the medieval road system and village, including the church, still surviving.
