Abstract/Summary

Further desk-based assessment and archaeological trial excavation was carried out by Northamptonshire Archaeology in May 1996 on land at the former Northampton High School for Girls, Derngate, Northampton (SP 758 602). The work was requested by the county heritage branch as the first stage of an Archaeological Recording Action and follows on from previous evaluation in 1991-2. The desk-based assessment has provided more information on the late fifteenth and sixteenth century property known as The Grange. Excavation has shown that any archaeological remains may be well preserved only in the south-west corner of the site. Elsewhere extensive disturbance caused by the recent construction of tennis courts and an extensive modern rubbish pit has removed all but deeply cut medieval and later quarry pits and a single wall foundation of post-medieval date.
