Full Description

{1} Fieldname Tower Close; lies between Cow Lane, Darngate and The Old Walls.

{3} South of Derngate. About 3.5m build-up of loose soil, undated, was found. The trench did not locate the defences.

{4} No details given.

{5} Medieval pottery was recovered from layers in trenches. Limestone, brick and charcoal fragments noted. Also contained abundant animal bones. Other layers revealed post medieval pottery, fragments of clay pipe and the lead patch from a pottery vessel.

{6} A roughly constructed sandstone wall, running north-east to south-west at the junction with Spring Gardens (which appears to lay within the area of Tower Close). Proved to be part of a post-medieval cellar.
