Abstract/Summary
A fieldwalking project was carried out at Upton, in the south-west district of Northampton, in the summer of 1991. The work is part of the second phase of an archaeological assessment of the Upton area, prior to proposed development. The group of fields that were fieldwalked are positioned in the triangle formed by the River Nene and two major roads, the A45, and the Upton Way. Most of the 10 fields surveyed are situated in the relatively flat valley of the River Nene (O.D.67m) with rising ground only in the fields that lay on the northern fringe of the area (Fields D, L & M). Virtually all of the fields are on a terrace of gravel or silt; the only exception being the north-east corner of Field D where stone and clay outcrops occur.
