Abstract/Summary

Two archaeological trenches were excavated on a block of land immediately to the north of the junction of St Leonard's Road and Towcester Road, Northampton, within the medieval suburb of Far Cotton. At the eastern end of the site a pre-19th century soil horizon was preserved beneath the shallow footings of 19th century buildings. It contained a few abraded sherds of medieval pottery, but there were no indications of nearby contemporary buildings. Where the former Towcester Road should have crossed the trench there was in excess of 1350mm of recently made up ground, and any earlier levels had been removed. The westernmost trench, which lay within a former railway siding, showed a depth of at least 1500mm of made-up ground dating to the 19th and 20th centuries, and any earlier soil horizons had been removed.
