Abstract/Summary

Trial trenching was undertaken on the site of a proposed residential development at Old Stratford, Northamptonshire. No archaeological fieldwork had been carried out on the development area previously. The site is adjacent to the A5, formerly the line of the Roman road, Watling Street, and several chance finds of Roman material are recorded in the area. In addition, pottery sherds of Roman and Saxon date were recovered during the construction of the Deanshanger to Old Stratford water pipeline, which crosses the northern end of the development area. Consequently, the site was identified as being of reasonable archaeological potential. In the event however, no archaeological finds or deposits were recovered from any of the ten trial trenches.
