Description
The investigation uncovered no archaeological evidence of the medieval period, but revealed that, for most part, the area affected by the development had witnessed little disturbance for three centuries. The exception was a large pit probable 17th century date at the north-eastern end of the plot, which was revealed to a depth of c. 0.8 m, yet remained un-bottomed. A meagre number of pottery sherds and apparent absence of animal bone, suggested that the feature may have been an extraction pit, possibly for marl, or brick/tile making. To date, there has been no other archaeological evidence of the period recorded from stratified contexts within the historic core of the village.
