Abstract/Summary

In April 2020 an archaeological investigation was carried out by Souterrain during groundwork for a new dwelling on a plot of land (c. 700 sq. m) known as Land at the Limes, Kilsby, Northamptonshire. Based on the historic origins of Kilsby and previous archaeological discoveries in and around the village, the site was considered to have potential for buried remains of medieval and post-medieval date. The development site is known to have been a part of a garden of a Georgian house since 1825, and before that, located to the rear of a row of cottages built in 1721. Before this date the nature of ground-use is not known. The investigation uncovered no archaeological evidence of the medieval period, but revealed that, for most part, the area affected by the development had witnessed little disturbance for three centuries. The exception was a large pit probable 17th century date at the north-eastern end of the plot, which was revealed to a depth of c. 0.8 m, yet remained un-bottomed. A meagre number of pottery sherds and apparent absence of animal bone, suggested that the feature may have been an extraction pit, possibly for marl, or brick/tile making. To date, there has been no other archaeological evidence of the period recorded from stratified contexts within the historic core of the village.
