Headland Archaeology (UK) Ltd undertook a trial trench evaluation at Wood Lodge Farm, Thrapston, Northamptonshire, where a solar farm is being proposed, between 03/04/23-09/06/23. The work was commissioned by Lighthouse Development Consulting on behalf of Wood Lodge Solar Limited (the Client). A total of 126 trenches were excavated out of which 59 were archaeologically sterile. In most cases these measured 50m x 1.8m, however the length was adjusted in certain cases due to logistical issues further explained in the “Methodology” section. The investigation corroborated to a large extend the results of an earlier magnetometer geophysical survey, which took place earlier in 2023 and confirmed the presence of three main foci of archaeological activity across three of the four fields included within the site boundary; one close to the eastern edge of Field 1 and two in Field 3. At each location previously detected geophysical anomalies indicative of multiple, clustered enclosures of varying size and shape were partially uncovered within the trenches as were the remains of trackways and some discrete features. Dating assessment of the artefactual material, which was retrieved from infills of the archaeological features correlates with the dating suggested by the pattern and morphology of the geophysical anomalies and the main periods represented on the site are Iron Age and Roman with a small amount of earlier prehistoric and post-medieval material present.
