Full Description

{1} Wellington Works Boot factory: building shown on Ordnance Survey map of 1900, by 1926 the works had been converted to a tannery. Owned by Owen Smith and later John King Smith who in 1894 was described as wholesale boot and shoe manufacturer, currier and leather merchant. The industrial works have now been built over by a modern housing estate, but the sign between the two houses/offices remains. Film 3, photo 5-7.
Chrome Tannery established in Raunds - it used the new process of chromium salts in tanning which sped the process up from one year for production to one day. Tannery located in former Wellington Works boot factory. Now built over by a modern housing estate.

{2} The factory is marked by an entranceway featuring a boot motif. The shoe factory was converted to a tannery during WWI.

{3} The Wellington Works shoe factory and tannery was demolished to make way for modern housing.
