SNN105063 - Archaeological Desk-Based Assessment and Proposals for Evaluation: Former Tannery, Wellington Road, Raunds, Northamptonshire

In September 2004 Archaeological Services and Consultancy Ltd carried out an archaeological desk-based assessment of a site at Wellington Road, Raunds. The assessment was undertaken as the first stage of an archaeological evaluation of the site. The evaluation is required to provide information regarding the potential of the development to disturb or destroy any buried archaeological remains that may be present at the site, and to formulate appropriate strategies to mitigate that disturbance. The assessment found no evidence of archaeological remains pre-dating the Post Medieval period within the assessment site. The proximity of the site to the postulated location of Peverel Manor and the Iron Age and later settlement focus at thorpe End indicated that archaeological activity may continue into the assessment area. The potential for the site to contain remains relating to a pre-1850 brickworks and a late 19th century gas works was also noted.The assessment concluded that a programme of geophysical survey and subsequent trial trenching was viable on the areas to the rear of the former tannery and gas works. Proposals for this programme are detailed in Appendix 1.
