Summary

Opened in 1904. The site was used as a military hospital during WW1. Summary from record 9022/1: The military hospital utilised the converted Irthlingborough Road gasworks with the men being nursed by Voluntary Aid Detachment personnel. {3} Three photos of the Emergency Military Hospital "which was set up at the gas works on Senwick Road between 1914-18 by Dr Audland who was a founder of the ambulance service in the town."

Full Description

{1} Wellingborough Gas Light Company Ltd erected new works in 1904 on land between Mill Road and Embankment Road. The original buildings are still in existence and are being used by a number of small businesses and modern gas works have been erected on the adjacent site.

{3} These gasworks had 112 stop-ended retorts in two benches of eight beds, eight retorts per bed. Many of the original buildings survive.

{5} The hospital is described as utilising the converted Irthlingborough Road Gasworks with the men being nursed by the VADs (quotes {4}).

{6} Three photos of the Emergency Military Hospital "which was set up at the gas works on Senwick Road between 1914-18 by Dr Audland who was a founder of the ambulance service in the town."

{7} WWII Air Ministry Gas Cylinder Testing Station. Located at Wellingborough Gas Works. The gas was used for barrage balloons.
