Full Description

{1} Cottage. C16/C17. Coursed ironstone rubble, tiled roof, brick stacks. L-plan. Two storeys, 2-bay cruck construction. Doorway in second bay from right has wood lintel, half-glazed door and gabled timber hood on brackets. 2-light casement windows with wood lintels on either side. 2-light casement windows with wood lintels on first floor. Blocked 2-light stone mullioned window to first floor on right side. Gabled extension to left, similar materials, 2 storey, one bay, has C20 windows. Interior: One blade of cruck exposed on ground floor, two blades and tie beam on first floor. Said to have timbers in left blackened by smoke from former central hearth.

{3} Isometric drawings of the building showing its possible evolution from a 2-bay late medieval hall-house with central hearth with 16th and 17th century improvements including the addition of a third bay to the east. The smoke-blackened cruck, purlins and rafters in bays 1 and 2 suggest that this was originally an open hall. In bay 2 the roof purlins are raised (and are not smoke blackened) to the same height as those in bay 3 and are built into the stack, indicating that all are likely to be contemporary alterations. The present roof in bay 1 is of simple construction and was probably intended for thatch.
