Summary

St Andrew's Hospital was constructed circa 1837 from ashlar with Welsh slated roofs to the designs of J Milne. It was built as a psychiatric hospital which at the time would have been known as a 'lunatic asylum'. New wings were added in 1840-1 and 1897, and the main building was heavily renovated circa 1875-99. As of 2011, St Andrew's is the UK's largest not-for-profit mental healthcare charity. They offer specialist services in the areas of mental healthcare, learning disabilities, acquired brain injuries, and, progressive and neurodegenerative conditions. The symmetrical, south west front of the building has a three storey, seven-window central block and three-storey, three-window end blocks. Beyond these are connecting two-storey, seven-window wings. The windows are sashes and the slightly projecting pedimented three-window centre has Roman Doric portico to the ground floor with coupled columns. The front block and wings are a Grade II listed building.
