Summary

A 17th century house that was converted into two dwellings in 1845 is located on the Northern side of the High Street. The house is constructed of squared coursed limestone with ashlar dressings and a double pitch Collyweston slate roof with ashlar gable and ridge chimney stacks and a gable parapet on the left. The house is single story with an attic range lit by three gabled dormer windows. The street facade has a four window range with a two story, five light canted bay window with stone mullions to the left under a large eaves gabled dormer with bargeboards to the apex. There is a sundial fixed to the gable with an inscription which reads "I ray for no man". To the right of the bay window are a door under a shallow arch, a casement under a keystone and two sash windows flanking a door on the right. An attached outbuilding to the rear was probably built during the 18th century.

Full Description

{1} House, now 2 dwellings. C17, converted into 2 dwellings 1845. Squared coursed limestone with Collyweston slate roof. Originally 3-unit plan. Single storey with attic. 4-window range with a C17 two-storey, 5-light canted bay window to left, with ovolo moulded stone mullions. Ashlar banded gable above has moulded kneelers. C19 casement window, to centre, and 2 C19 sash windows to right, all under shallow stone arches. 2 gabled eaves dormers, to attic, have Cl9 casement windows. 2 C19 panelled doors, between window range, under shallow stone arch and wood lintel. Ashlar gable parapet, to left. Stone and ashlar stacks to ridge and end. Sundial on gable has inscription, " I ray for no man". Interior not inspected. Outbuilding attached to rear is probably C18.

{4} No 6 High Street is shown on 1841 Enclosure Map, as is the outbuilding to the rear, however the latter is much more extensive at this date.
