Summary

A dovecote approximately 70 metres northwest of Eaglethorpe Farm, on the northern side of Eaglethorpe at Mill End. A circular dovecote built of regular coursed oolitic limestone with a conical Collyweston slate roof surmounted by a wooden glover with a conical cap. The south facing side has a plank door under a timber lintel with a small two light window above. It is unusual being one of the few dovecotes in the county with lath and plaster nest boxes. The dovecote was built between 1780 and 1800, the turning ladder, or potence, was replaced in 1944.

Full Description

{1} Dovecote. Late C17/early C18. Regular coursed limestone with Colleyweston slate roof. Circular plan. Doorway, with wood lintel, has casement opening above also under wood lintel. Conical roof with wooden glover also with conical capping. Interior: originally had 797 nesting boxes constructed from timber, plaster and lathe resting on corbelled masonry; 2 sections remain. The revolving ladder has been renewed.
