Find Spot record 4280/0/1 - Probable Roman settlement, Sandy Hill Farm

A small excavation was undertaken in 1959 and a cobbed surface and pottery was found. A ditch has also been identified. Fieldwalking survey identified a Roman pottery scatter.

{1} (SP 79547969) A cobbled surface (6' x 3') with signs of burning and fragments of Roman pottery found in 1959. The pottery and photographs are now in Westfield Museum, Kettering. Also find in 1964/5 of a C3rd Roman coin of Allectus. The coin is held by the finder.

{2} Includes photograph of cobbled area.

{3} A Romano-British ditch of C2nd date was recorded in the farmyard area by Mr. Spendlove.

{4} Sherds of colour-coated ware were found. At the farm a Roman ditch was dug out in the garden containing C1st pot sherds, and more pottery was recovered in the field to the south, currently under grass (pers com. Spendlove).

{5} A small excavation by F V Lyall took place at this site in 1959 but the farmer was uncooperative, and before a definite classification could be made the work was stopped.

{7} Ro coins of Allectus (AD 294-6) found by Mr Spindlers (Sand Hill Farm, Orton) in 1964-5. In Mr Spindlers' possession.
