Full Description

{1} Public house, forming part of a row. Early C18. Regular coursed limestone with thatch roof. Originally 3-unit plan. Part single storey with attic and part 2 storeys. 4-window range with 2 C19 canted bays and one casement under wood lintel. 3 C19 casements to attic and first floor, one is under eyebrow dormer, the others are under wood lintels. C19 four-panel door to left of centre is under flat wooden hood. Brick stacks at ridge. C19 one-unit 2-storey extension to right has slate roof and simila casements. Interior has open fireplace with bressumer and ceiling beams.

{5} The OS surveyors’ map of 1810 shows the village in more detail, a building shown on the site of The Vane Arms. A Tithe Map of 1839 shows the building without the addition of the range at the rear of the eastern end. It is not until the 1880s First Edition OS map that the outline of the building can be clearly seen. This shows it as a single long range parallel to Main Street, with two further ranges projecting from it at right angles to the rear. The easternmost projection appears to represent the C19th addition which is thought to have contained the bakery. The projection at the west end has now been lost to a mid-C20th extension.
The building has been a public house since at least 1849, when it was held by William Bell and called The Cleveland Arms. In 1861 and 1869 it was held by Ann Bell, when for a short time it was known as the Dukes Arms. By 1885 it was The Cleveland Arms again. In 1894 it is listed as being held by Ann Bell, victualler, farmer and baker, until at least 1906. It was from then onwards known as The Vane Arms. Further owners are listed.
Further details of the building given in relation to proposed alterations.
