Full Description

{2} Brass rubbing of a couple (1415).

{5} Sudborough is thought to be of Saxon foundation, the name possibly deriving from South burgh, and has also been suggested as part of an estate connected with the site of a Saxon royal residence in nearby Brigstock. In 1086 the village is named Sutberg. In 1066 the manor was granted to Westminster Abbey, and retained thus until Dissolution. It then descended to the Mordaunt family, later Earls of Peterborough. After 1720 it passed to the Dukes of Cleveland. The majority of buildings in the village date to the C17th and C18th, the C13th church being the only fabric to pre-date this.
No particularly early maps have been located for the village, Eyre’s being the earliest examined. The OS surveyors’ map of 1810 shows the village in more detail.
